Essay about abortion Essay

It is true that abortion may be the death of an innocent being. If that is correct, any woman who has had an abortion should be subject to the consequences of a premeditative first degree murderer, which could possibly be the death penalty. However, the question that truly forms the debate is this: Is the zygote really a human being? Surely there are signs that show life, but is it developed enough to function as a human? I contend that the fetus is not a right-possessing individual, until the point of birth. It cannot claim any rights, while it is still part of the mother. Being part of the mother, it is the mother’s. What happens to her body through the course of her pregnancy is her choice. Therefore, abortion is solely the mother’s choice, and outsiders should not block, or even oppose, her rights as an American. Certainly today’s society needs to clean up it’s act. In most young adults, good morals aren’t commonly used. But they do use their common sense. Young adults are fully aware of what they are getting into, they just aren’t sure of all the consequences. Education plays a big role in this issue. Being taught about birth control and planned parenting statistically helps the number of accidents that can cause abortion. Nevertheless, accidents will happen. Rape will still occur, there will be the rebels, the careless, and the clueless. People make mistakes every day. There should be something to fall back on in a case of an unplanned or unwanted pregnancy. Abortion can be for the well-being of both the mother and the potential child. A woman needs to take full responsibility of her actions. For instance, in a pregnancy, this can come in different forms. It can be when the woman decides to carry to term and be the child’s mother, or when she gives it up for adoption. She can also pay for her own abortion. As a result, the mother will be doing what she truly believes is morally right for the being growing inside of her. Of course the possibility of putting an innocent being to death, is seemingly absurd, and though one may not believe that the being is actually living, there is the possibility. Also, the child the woman is carrying may have the cure for cancer or AIDS. Or it could be the next serial killer. The being might very well deserve a chance at life. On the contrary, there are women  who truly aren’t ready to have a child. This is not only mentally, but physically and emotionally also. I admit that I will never get an abortion, but I strongly believe that it is a necessary option. Also if the child is impaired, has birth defects, Downs Syndrome, or any deadly or life-threatening disease that can be detected before birth, should it live? A woman needs to have the choice of how she wants her potential child’s life to be lived. A woman needs the options to be open. If she does not want to give the baby up for adoption, should she be forced to if she doesn’t have enough money to care for it? So, the mother should be entitled to any decision concerning the being living inside of her, because the chances are that the choice the mother makes will be beneficial. Surely there are people who will get into a pregnancy that have no idea what they are doing. They may get scared and decide to just have an abortion because they aren’t ready to have a child. A woman may feel that this will end all of her hopes and dreams for the future. They may or may not realize that there are other options such as adoption. However, what the woman decides to do, in my opinion, is completely her choice. The being that is growing inside of her body, is hers. Wendy McElroy says, â€Å"Everything beneath the skin is me; this is the line which no one has the right to cross without permission.†Say the world comes to where you can take one pill which would murder the growing being. Could she not have the right to swallow? Can a woman claim the right to her own body when she can’t even control what goes into it? People do not have contracts with their neighbors, friends, and relatives saying that they will not steal from one another or kill each other. Everyone’s body and property is theirs by right. If a fetus is granted individual rights, the contract is superfluous to those rights’ protection. If these rights are not being claimed, there is no possibility for contracts, because a contract is voluntary. So, giving rights to a fetus is useless because of the fact that it will be living inside of the woman, and if she has the right to rid it from her body and wants to do so, the being cannot even fend for itself in the argument at all, and will end up not having it’s way. Admittedly, the number of diseases that are passed genetically has slightly  decreased. Scientists have also been decoding human DNA. This can lead to pin-pointing the exact spot of birth defects and life-threatening diseases and fixing them. On the other hand, we have not yet reached that point in technology. Today testing is available for mothers to see if their potential child has any defects or disease. This greatly influences her decisions on whether to have the baby or not. There are so many factors that can affect the fragile time of pregnancy. There are endless possibilities of things that can be harmful to the growth and development of the baby. If the woman decides to go through with the pregnancy there are things that she can change about herself that can lessen the risk of defects. Such as smoking, drinking, drugs. The problem is that those things can mold the woman into being dependent on. If she chooses to continue to drink while she is pregnant, that is her choice, but she is not the only one who will be affected. If the woman feels that she would not want to have the possibility of her child being defected or doesn’t believe that she could make it with out drinking, she should have the option of abortion. In short, there are many ways that what the pregnant woman does that can change the outcome of her child, and she should be able to make her own decisions concerning the well-being of both herself and the unborn child. Obviously there’s the good side and the bad side to abortion. What seems to be happening today is that people are getting too worked up about something that may never be solved. Both sides of the issue are sketchy, and are very controversial. We may never actually come to a conclusion. On the contrary, we need to look at the laws and see if it is legally possible to ban abortion, or let it freely take place. The question is if the zygote or fetus should be considered a live being or not. Finally, what you believe is your choice. Think a little about what other people may be going through and if a forced pregnancy is even a possibility. Whether you side with me, or are against abortion, always be open-minded.

The size of inhibition is usually measured and then compared to the standardized measurements in order to determine the level of antibiotic activity on the particular medium. This is primarily because the diameter of the inhibition zone is always a function of the susceptibility of the microorganism and the amount of antibiotics on the medium. Generally there are a number of factors that may affect the antimicrobial activity and consequently determine the size of inhibition zones. Some of the likely factors include agar depth, size of the inoculums and the presence of cations on the medium. The objective of this experiment is to investigate the factors that are responsible for the variation of microbial activity of various antimicrobial drugs on different or ganisms. Methods To investigate the effects of variables such as agar depth, presences of salt and inoculums size on the size of inhibition zones, lawn and seeding methods were used to inoculate the plates. In determining the effect of agar depth on the result of agar plate diffusion, four plates containing 10 cm3, 20 cm3, 20 cm3 and 30 cm3 agar were first swabbed with Eschericia coli 10418 (1:20 dilution). All plates were oriented horizontally except for the third one, which was slanted. Meanwhile, 2 plates each containing 20 cm3 DSTA were inoculated with 100 Â µl of either 1:20 E.coli dilution or undiluted broth culture. 4 discs each containing 20 Â µl 0.5 mg/ml ampicillin were placed in each of the plates. Finally the plates were then incubated overnight at 37Â °C and the variations in the inhibition zone size were recorded. To determine the effect of inoculum size on the antibiotic activity, 0.5mg/ml ampillicin solution and the E.coli dilution were used.2 plates with 20 cm3 D STA were poured into the solution. The first inoculate was then spread uniformly on the entire surface of the plate. On the second plate was also inoculated with a containing broth culture of E.coli was also inoculated. This number had increased from 36 percent in 2007 (ESA, 2008). Following the world mainstream, parents pay many time in enjoying comedy or educational games like Neighbour From Hell or Worm Book. An another research show that 97 per cent of teens aged 12-17 play video games, and that their gaming activity had become an essential part of their social experience (Kate, 2008). Moreover, the study which was released last in 2008 also found out that 52 per cent of teenagers played games in which they considered moral and ethical issues; 43 per cent played games in which they made decisions about the way a community, city or nation should be drive; and 40 per cent played games in which they learned about a social issue. As the result, the significant high rate of social game may bring us optimistic consideration in the benefit of video game in our world. Drawbacks of Playing Video Games Violence exposure Another effect of video game is that it makes people commit violent behavior. Although there is not enough statistical evidence to find out if violent video game is the reason for major crimes such as murder or robbery, many researches have stated that playing too much brutal games with an enormous amount of time can affect our psychological state, thus influencing our actions. This could be true for people with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD). ASPD is a mental health condition in which a person has a pervasive pattern of disregard for, exploiting or violating the rights of others. This disorder begins in early time of ones life and may continue when a human is grown up. Individual high in hostility tends to be more offensive after playing violent video games while another one low in hostility is less likely to be (Gentile, Lynch, Linder, Walsh, 2004). In the book Grand Theft Childhood: The Surprising Truth About Violent Video Games by Lawrence Kutner and Cheryl K. Olson (2008), they concluded that people who played mature-rated games had a higher chance of aggressive actions, such as getting into a fight, bullying, damaging school’s properties, than those didn’t play any games of that kind . Nowadays, there is not a completely reliable research that defines the link between violent video games and major crimes. However, many criminal incidents connected to video games happen every year. In May 2010, French gamer Julien Barreaux hunted and stabbed a fellow player to death who had slashed Barreaux on the game Counter-Strike with a virtual knife. Alexiane Potel, the judge at his trial called him a menace to society† (Lilian Juliet, 2001). Addiction In addition, another possible downside of video games is that they may make people become addicted to them. Extreme overuse of video games can manipulate our lives and we would care about nothing but spending a lot of hours playing them. Professor Mark Griffiths, of Nottingham Trent University, revealed the results of a survey of 7,000 online gamers in a British Science Museum lecture with 12% of the majority have sign of addiction (BBC News, 2006). A person who spends an excessive amount on gaming environment may lack their skill of communication. They neglect to go outside and take part in social activities. However, if a meeting among fellow gamers is going to take place, they definitely do not want to miss that party. This maybe because they just want to talk with people with the same interests, especially the ones who share the mutual kind of games they play. Video games addiction also causes health problems. If a person is totally addicted to video games, he/she would not consider sleeping or even eating. On a long run, this causes the muscles to work less and may lead to obesity (Mayo Clinic staff, 2011). There have been many deaths because of game addiction. On July 15, Chuang, a Taiwanese teenager was dead because of playing Diablo III 40 hours straight. The report said that Chuang could stand only a few minutes when he woke up and then collapsed . The reason of his death is cardiovascular, which involves a heart or blood vessels (The Australian, 2012). Physiological Effect. Some researchers believe that playing electronic game can lead to the increase in heart rates of inexperienced gamers (Zain A Sobani, Ali Pervaiz, Mohsin Yakub, Ali Khawaja, Rehmatullah Khan, 2011). The reason is that they have no experience in playing video games; when they play, they feel like they are the characters in that game and their heart rates will increase when those characters face the problem, for example. Moreover, a person who really addicts to the video games will play it without having meals and sleeping, so the consequence is that he will lose consciousness and his health will become worse. Furthermore, some doctors believe that there are harmful rays leaving out of the screen. They are extremely harmful because they directly damage the gamers eyes. This is the reason why there is an increase in the number of people from younger generation who become short-sighted. Another bad effect causing by playing video games is arthritis. Gamers spend a long time sitting on chair, so they will be inactive. Because they only use their brain, eyes and hands, other parts of their body do not operated. In long term, it will cause the inflammation of the joints. Unreal World Syndrome Playing video games can create the gender bias (Flew Humphreysl, 2005). As people know, in lots of games, the main characters always look like heroes; the male is very tall, handsome, has big muscle and the female has the soft white skin, a beautiful outlook. Gamers, especially the younger, they think that those characters are the standard of them, so they try to live in an imaginary world. In that world, girls are objectives for boys and men to rescue. Therefore, boys usually try to prove themselves for the girls such as the heroes. This case cause extremely serious violence in school environment (Hazler Carney, 2000). All of those will lead to the stereotypes in the perception of gamers. They only see the world in video games is their ideal world. Some reports showed that they often apply the way to solve problems or troubles to the reality. As a result, changing manners happens silently and automatically. They may no longer respect their parents and teachers and may even think that those people are their enemies. Conclusion. On the bright aspect, videos games are able to help players improve dexterity, build relationships and acquire high concentration, multitasking and quick response and numerate abilities. Moreover, educators effectively use video games for educational orientation, military or medical treatment in relieving pain or stress. In addition, game industry has been proliferating stronger than ever. This young and auspicious field has contributed prodigiously to the development of the many economies. On the downside, video games can somehow cause addiction, violent behavior or even lacking social and communicational skills. Modern video games with 3D graphic, intricacy, online playing and continuously updated objectives are sources of appeals that grasp players’ attention and they cannot get their eyes off the screen. Nevertheless, the games themselves do not account for the addiction and bad effects caused to the players. People should play responsibly to get benefits from video games. Time spent on video games should be learning time besides entertaining, not a waste. There should be a balance between playing games and attending outdoor activities. Nonetheless, not all children are able to be aware that playing too much video games is a threat. They incline to keeping playing because they find games fascinating. In such situations, in lieu of thwarting their kids from playing games, parents should control and give them directions. Besides, using video games in education should be encouraged more. Educators, especially teachers, should have an open-minded attitude towards this concept. Family and school should collaborate to help children yield the most out of video games. Bartleby the Scrivener Essay In the course of the story the narrator describes the each characters however such is limited only to their performance in the workplace and none was revealed in their personal life. The narrator who is a lawyer in Wall Street keeps a company of three people, Turkey, Nippers, and Bartleby. Turkey, and English man who has a strange temperament that that the narrators likened to a sun rising in the morning rendering a calm atmosphere and becomes rather too hot in midday that lasts until dinner. Nippers on the other hand is the antithesis of Turkey. He is irritable in the morning and is rather calm in the afternoon. Aside from this, he also â€Å"dresses like a gentleman† as the narrator would put it in contrast to Turkey whose fashion statement is anything but appealing to the author (Melville, 1935). The narrator says he keeps Turkey and Nippers in his office because they efficient despite their mood swing. Perhaps they can be likened to the typical office clerks who got fed up with the monotony of their jobs that they have developed outburst as ways of coping. Nothing is revealed of their personal life but since they are described as efficient by the author, then there is the assumption that despite their mood swings and peculiar outbursts they are likable. On the case of Bartleby, on which the story’s title is attributed, the narrator finds him rather odd. He is a copyist same as Nippers and Turkey however he refuses to do other things such as reading a file or sending mail. As the story ends it is revealed that he works for the Dead Letter Office and as the author puts it, Bartleby is â€Å"prone to a pallid hopelessness† and his work in the Dead Letter Office only cultivated his depression (Melville, 1935). Bartleby exhibits passive resistance which is connected to his detachment from society and his roles. It can be interpreted as his refusal to be a slave to the corporate world by doing what he wishes. Overall, he poses no threat to his Boss since he can choose to dispose him whichever way he pleases but his Boss exhibits a remarkable form of charity and pity towards him. He even offers his house for Bartleby to stay at. At the end of the story when he heard rumors of Bartleby’s previous occupation he took pity on him and how his job has destroyed him.

The Acquisition Strategy Of Bankinter Marketing Essay Bankinter is a small independent national bank, positioning itself as an innovative, multichannel, low-cost financial services provider. The bank uses various customer acquisition networks and distribution channels (brick-and-mortar branch, virtual banking and agents, telephone, internet). The firm realized that the Internet is a low-cost channel suitable for a smaller bank like itself, and launched its online site, e-bankinter.com in 1997, which ranked as the best online financial site in Spain. The Internet branch of the bank is called Branch 8700. In 2001, the Internet was the main source of entry of new consumers, so it was important part of the customer acquisition strategy of the firm. The Internet acquisition strategy of Bankinter was based on three channels: alliances, e-collaborators and 8700. I prepared a table to describe the advantages and disadvantages of the alliances and e-collaborators acquisition strategies. As from the table can be seen, the e-collaborator strategy was much more efficient in terms of acquiring new customers and it resulted in lower acquisition costs, so Bankinter decided to terminate the alliances with the portals and focused on e-collaborators. The Branch 8700 acquires the most customers, followed by e-collaborators and alliances. The nonformalization rate is the highest in case of e-collaborators (76%, 33,003 clients). To analyze the performance of the three online channels, I computed the customer lifetime value for each channel. The excel tables containing the detailed analysis can be found in the Appendix. Due to the lack of information on interest rates, I used a 10 % interest rate in all scenarios to make the calculations transparent and the results easily comparable. I used two decimals at the calculations, except for the retention rates, where I used rounded numbers. When calculating the retention rates I used the first years retention rate as a base to calculate each years retention rate. I assumed a short-term and long-term period to show the results: 5 years and 10 years period also because at some scenarios the expected years in bank exceeds the 5 years period. By adding the first five years discounted values (including year 0 with the acquisition cost), or by adding the first ten years discounted values we arrive at the customer lifetime value. Based on the customer lifetime value, the 8700 is the best performing channel, because in this case the profitable clients have the highest customer lifetime value among the three scenarios. However, the customer lifetime value of the nonprofitable clients is also the highest in case of 8700, which means the highest costs. As there are only slight differences among the customer lifetime values of the nonprofitable clients of the three channels, it is less important. I mentioned in the previous part that the rate of the nonformalized and formalized customers is the best in case of 8700 (47% to 53%). Based on these calculations the 8700 is the best performing channel. E-collaborators is the second best option, as it has the second biggest customer lifetime value in case of profitable clients. 3) What (acquisition) strategy would you recommend to Bankinter? What actions should be taken by Ana Peralta? Bankinter is a multichannel bank known as the leader in online banking in its respective country. As both the traditional brick-and-mortar and online channels are essential for the bank, it should keep both focusing on the Internet branch. The brick-and-mortar channel still plays an important part, because of customer loyalty and cross-selling opportunities, as well as the high number of branch transactions (36% Exhibit 5). However, Bankinter could persuade customers to reduce the branch transactions and use Internet banking instead; it would result in lower transaction costs for the bank. Focusing on the Internet branch is also important because in 2001 it is the main source of entry, which means that it is an acquisition strategy of great relevance. Moreover, the Internet marketing campaign of the bank was successful, as the acquisition costs dropped and the number of new customers increased exponentially. I would suggest continuing the campaign, however changing some elements. Bankinter should focus on 8700 customers as their customer lifetime value is the highest. Among 8700 customers e-brokers and e-mortgage customers are the most valuable; Bankinter could try cross-selling to them. As for the other customers, finding new ways through introducing new services and attractive packages can help them turn into profitable clients. Drop alliances (as Bankinter did), and use e-collaborators instead. The problem with e-collaborators is the high number of nonformalized customers and the fact that the rate of the new customer acquisition strategy was correlated to the amount of incentives offered. By using the CRM system of the bank, it can recognize which marketing segments are the most valuable, and it enables the bank to use targeting. By using targeting in the e-collaborators channel Bankinter can attract more valuable customers. Finding the appropriate target groups also reduces the drawback of incentives. Bankinter should also find out what factors are behind the high number of nonformalization by conducting surveys, analyzing information on the nonformalized customers and the process itself. This way, they can introduce new services or alter their registration process.

Our world today is torn apart by the greed of others. It is submerged in the excesses of the rich and the powerful. As per surveys conducted by the United Nations the top ten percent of the world’s population control two thirds of the earths natural resources. Today we are racked by war, hatred, racism, genocide and terrorism. It is at this hour we need the basic tenets of morality to guide us at the epoch of civilization, an era which compromises the best of times and the worst of times. In troubled times we turn to others for help. In these days there exists no more kindred souls so we are left to turn to ourselves for help. When we turn to ourselves, let us at least be true to our conscience, so that we may escape from the sin of deceit. Today’s society demands that we compromise on our basic morality for survival. In this world deceit has taken over our lives. We lie to ourselves, our friends, to our enemies, to our employers and to our near and dear ones. We are forced to and rarely do we have a choice. Even if we had a choice, there rarely exists a person of sufficient moral fiber to exercise his or her choice. Even if we are compelled to deceit for the sake of others, let us not lie blatantly and remorsefully but take heed that what we are doing is wrong. Today many circumstances demand that we resort to deceit, so that we may eke out a decent living, live with dignity and protect those around us. The evils of globalization, terrorism, bigotry and unnecessary competition for basic necessities have ensured that. It is no more an option but a necessity for the common man to turn to deceit. Let us take a look at some fairly recent examples close to our home and in the international scenario. During the riots in Gujarat several people were killed, burnt, raped and tortured. All for the sake of religious bigotry. Now if a person wishes to escape unharmed with his or her dignity intact, and in the course of escape if should he have to lie about his religious interests to do so, cannot be condemned for every one has been given the right to live with dignity.

I do not agree with the statement because I do think that Macbeth was unimaginative I think that he had quite an imagination and this was shown at least twice in the book. I also do not really think that he was a monster he was really just trying to save his own life. Also I thought he was timid because a lot of the time his wife put him up to things that he did not really want to do.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Macbeth was portrayed by Shakespeare to be a strong war hero who drove the Norwegians out of Scotland, and caught the traitor the Thane of Cawdor, when really he was just a timid person who was putting on an act to please people like the king, his wife, and his friends. Although Macbeth is portrayed to be physically strong he is mentally quite weak, and this is shown when he believes every word that the witches say, and he ends up resting, thinking that no one can take him off the throne.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Macbeth is shown to be timid quite a few times in the book, in that he lacks the mental strength to do things, so his wife questions his manhood and calls him weak. After she insulted him, he thinks that he is wrong and she is right, so he go against his own conscience, in the end he was right and Lady Macbeth wrong. Lady Macbeth tells Macbeth when the king is in their castle to “Your hand, your tongue: look like th’ innocent flower, but be serpent under’t.'; What this meant was that Macbeth looked and talked like an innocent little flower, but under that fake mask he was an evil serpent. I agree that Macbeth was unimaginative to a degree but then again he had an imagination because he saw the daggers before he killed King Duncan, and after he got Banquo killed he saw the image of Banquo in his seat. An example of this is stated here: ';Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch Thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still. Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible To feeling as to sight, or art thou but A dagger of the mind, a false creation, Proceeding from the heat oppressed brain?'; This is where Macbeth is imagining that there is a dagger in front of him. I think that this shows that he does actually have an imagination and sometimes it gets the better of him.

Carlsberg Background and History in Malaysia Essay

The Carlsberg Group is a Danish brewing company founded in 1847 by J. C. Jacobsen after the name of his son Carl. The headquarters are in Copenhagen, Denmark. The company’s main brand is Carlsberg Beer, but it also brews Tuborg as well as local beers. After merging with the brewery assets of Norwegian conglomerate Orkla ASA in January 2001, Carlsberg became the 5th largest brewery group in the world. It is the leading beer seller in Russia with about 40 percent market share. In 2009 Carlsberg is the 4th largest brewery group in the world employing around 45,000 people. Carlsberg was founded by J. C. Jacobsen. The first brew was finished on 10 November 1847. Export of Carlsberg beer began in 1868. Some of the company’s original logos include an elephant (after which some of its lagers are named) and the swastika. Jacobsen set up the Carlsberg Laboratory in 1875 which worked on scientific problems related to brewing. It featured a Department of Chemistry and a Department of Physiology. The species of yeast used to make pale lager, Saccharomyces carlsbergensis, was isolated at the Laboratory and was named after it. The laboratory was part of the Carlsberg Foundation until 1972 when it was renamed the Carlsberg Research Center and transferred to the brewery In December 1969, Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Berhad (Carlsberg Malaysia) began brewing Carlsberg Green Label beer locally in 1972. How to Stop Bullying Essay

On April 16th 2009, eleven year old Jaheem Herrera woke up acting strangely and did not want to go to school, but he packed his bag and went to Dunaire Elementary in DeKalb County, Georgia. When he came back from school that day, he was much happier and gave his mother his report card full of As and Bs. She gave him a high five and he went upstairs while his mother fixed dinner. A little while later his younger sister called him down to eat, but Jaheem didn’t answer. So, his mother and younger sister went upstairs to check on him and found him hanging by his belt in the closet. (CNN 1) Bullying is a horrible crime that has always affected many young people and we need to find a way to stop it. There are four kinds of bullying and they are physical, verbal, covert, and cyber. Physical bullying includes kicking, tripping, pushing, hitting and damaging property. Verbal bullying includes insults, teasing, name calling, intimidation, and homophobic or racist remarks. Covert bullying is harder to recognize because it is done behind the bullying victims back, this kind of bullying can include spreading rumors, playing cruel jokes to embarrass and humiliate, mimicking unkindly, encouraging other to socially exclude someone, or damaging someone’s social reputation or social acceptance. The last type of bullying is cyber bullying; this kind is done in the digital world and it can include harassment via a mobile phone, intentionally excluding someone from social networking spaces, or setting up an insulting personal website. (NCAB) In order to stop bullying at school, school districts now have to find a way to budget their money to afford bullying programs. The money they use is tax dollars and those tax dollars â€Å"get spent just trying to make sure that people are treated with respect. Something we all should do freely, without the imposition of consequences.† (Burns) Another thing is that teachers usually get paid by their student’s attendance and everyday 160,000 students stay home from school due to bullying. (Burns) Bullying doesn’t just happen at school because â€Å"according to the National Institute of Occupational Safety Health, there is a loss of employment amounting to $19 billion and a drop in productivity of $3 billion due to workplace bullying.† (Burns) Also, since 1999, â€Å"the Office of Violence against women has spent around $98  million in assistance to address campus sexual violence.† (Burns) I believe that verbal bullying has the most affects on the bullying victim because they will never forget what the bully said and how it made them feel and that’s what causes them to go as far as committing suicide. From a survey taken in March 2011, twenty percent of high school students say that they have seriously considered committing suicide within the last 12 months. (Burns) An example of this statistic actually coming true is Jaheem Herrera. Jaheem Herrera’s mom, Masika Bermudez, believes that bullies at Jaheem’s school pushed him over the edge. They would call him words such as â€Å"gay, ugly, and â€Å"the virgin† just because he was from the Virgin Islands.† (CNN 1) Jaheem finally got tired of it and now his mother will never get to see her son grow up. Jaheem’s school has an anti – bullying program that was â€Å"considered exemplary and includes programs to raise awareness and a specially trained liaison. Students are even asked to sign a no bullying pledge.† (CNN 1) Masika Bermudez and other parents say that they have complained about bullying as well. Another statistic says that sixty-five percent of teens are bullied each year and most believe adults can’t help them. Another example of verbal bullying is 11 year old Carl Walker – Hoover, who committed suicide by hanging himself on the stairwell banister on April 6th 2009, just 10 days before Jaheem Herrera. When Carl Walker came home from school that day he told his mom, Sirdeaner Walker – Hoover, â€Å"†¦his backpack had hit the TV stand and that the TV stand hit a girl. The girl got really upset and threatened to beat him.† (CNN 2) However, that’s not the only thing that happened, since fifth grade Carl had been having problems with other students. For example, they would call him ‘gay’ and he’d be verbally teased every day. It got to a point where Carl was so afraid of being bullied, he ate lunch with a guidance counselor. Carl’s story is also an example of sexual bullying which is really a form of sexual harassment. An example of cyber bullying is Ryan Halligan who committed suicide in 2003 also because of sexual harassment. Ryan started to get teased in fifth grade and his dad’s response was â€Å"It’s just words. You need to just ignore him†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (CNN 2) However, the maltreatment still continued up until seventh grade  when Ryan came home to tell his parents that he was becoming friends with one of his bullies. Soon later, the bully backstabbed him and spread a rumor around school that Ryan was gay and because of that, kids who didn’t normally pick on Ryan got in on the bullying. Ryan started to receive rude, wicked, and homophobic emails but he still didn’t tell his parents about them. One day Ryan went to go talk to a girl whom he had been chatting online with for a long time and the girl told Ryan that he was a loser and didn’t want anything to do with him and then laughed in his face. This is another thing that pushed Ryan over the edge.  "Cyber bullying is far more dangerous than what we had to deal with a generation ago. The level of pain that can be brought about by this behavior is unbelievable.† (CNN 2) In 2009, a survey took down what percentage of high school students have been bullied on school property by race/ ethnicity within 2008. Twenty percent of all children say they have been bullied and this survey shows exactly that. (Burns) Out of all the students at this high school, 19.9 percent report that they have been bullied. The top three races that were bullied were Caucasian at 21.6 percent, American Indian/ Alaska Native at 33.8 percent, and non Hispanic multiple race at 23.9 percent. (CDC) Bullying is a horrible crime that has always affected many young people and we need to find a way to stop it. These stories about Jaheem, Carl, and Ryan being bullied are just a few of the hundreds of thousands of bullying problems that kids, students, and even adults have to deal with everyday. To help this problem, I believe that at every school in America it should be necessary to have an anti – bullying program because according to a statistic, in a school where there are bullying programs, bullying is reduced by 50 percent. Mohandas Gandhi: A Moral/Economic Progress Essay

In Mohandas Gandhi’s speech â€Å"Economic and Moral Progress† emphasis is placed on distinguishing the difference between economic and moral progress. From Gandhi’s experience and studies he recognizes that economic and moral progress are often opposing and interchangeable. Gandhi states that he knows little of economics but was more that happy to speak on the topic because of his strong belief in the importance of moral progress over economic progress. Gandhi relies primarily on religious text coupled with all three rhetoric devices to exemplify his argument. Gandhi quotes the bible in saying â€Å"Take no thought for the morrow† meaning one should seek morality over material advantage, an idea prevalent â€Å"in almost all the religious scriptures in the world†(Gandhi 334) and it is this very idea with which Gandhi argues. Gandhi views economic progress and moral progress as two singular properties. Gandhi makes the assumption at the beginning of his speech that economic progress refers to one’s materialistic wealth while moral progress refers to â€Å"real progress† (Gandhi 334) Gandhi introduces his idea of what defines moral progress by asking â€Å"Does not moral progress increase in the same proportion as material progress?† (Gandhi 334) In this question Gandhi is examining the relationship between economic and moral progress. Gandhi states that it is popular belief that â€Å"material progress does not clash with moral progress†, so it must necessarily advance the latter. Gandhi exemplifies this popular idea and applies it to the â€Å"case of thirty millions of India stated by the late Sir William Wilson Hunter to be living on one meal a day† this case built on the idea that before attending to one’s moral welfare their daily needs must first be satisfied. Gandhi continues on state how absurd this idea it is, it is his belief that every human has the right to life, food, clothing and shelter but to obtain these things â€Å"we need no assistance from economists†(Gandhi 334) It is Gandhi’s belief that the â€Å"test of orderliness in a country is not the number of millionaires it owns, but the absence of starvation among its masses†. Gandhi’s argument relies heavily on his use of ethos in quoting religious texts as well as historical figures. It is Gandhi’s idea that economic progress does not necessarily clash or assist in moral progress, but rather acts a vehicle, which holds the possibility for either outcome. Gandhi illustrates the potential for economic progression leading to moral growth when he recalls his time in South Africa. Gandhi had observed that the  people of South Africa believed that â€Å"the greater possession of riches, the greater was their moral turpitude†(Gandhi 335) mea ning that the societal norms frowned upon living in excess and not sharing wealth. Though in contrast, Gandhi exemplifies economic progress leading to moral decay when he addresses the decline and fall of Rome, Egypt and even the Hindu deity Krishna, â€Å"with them material gain has not necessarily meant moral gain†(Gandhi 335) Gandhi is not opposing the pursuit of wealth, but the pursuit of wealth for material advantage. Gandhi applies pathos to religious ideals, evident when he describes what he believes to be symbolic of material progress, he states â€Å"It is not possible to conceive gods inhabiting a land which is made hideous by the smoke and the din of mill chimneys and factories and whose roadways are traversed by rushing engines dragging numerous cars crowded with men who know not what they are after†(Gandhi 337) Gandhi’s vivid imagery successfully conveys his idea that material wealth has corrupted the values of society and stunted moral progression. Gandhi’s speech is strongly driven by his use of ethics and emotion, but his speech also appeals to the logical mind. Gandhi’s use of logos is evident during his quotation of â€Å"the great scientist†(Gandhi 337) Alfred Wallace. Wallace, a British naturalist states that his country has put power and wealth before nature and Christianity and describes â€Å"†¦how as the country has rapidly advanced in riches, it has gone down in morality†(Wallace 338) Gandhi’s speech is largely based on the idea that society today upholds a distorted set of values, placing emphasis on material advantage and economic gain over moral growth and progress. Gandhi’s use of rhetoric devices appeal to a diverse audience using logic, ethics and emotion to prove that moral progress trumps economic progress.

Multicultural Education by Keith Wilson Essay

Multicultural education relates to education and instruction designed for the cultures of several different races in an educational system. This approach to teaching and learning is based upon consensus building, respect, and fostering cultural pluralism within racial societies. Multicultural education acknowledges and incorporates positive racial idiosyncrasies into classroom atmospheres. Pros of Multicultural Education A significant demographic transformation is on the horizon for the United States of America. Bennett (1995) estimates that â€Å"by the year 2000, over 30 percent of our school age population will be children of color† (p. 18). Additionally, research has indicated that ethnic minority students are disproportionately poor, dropping out of school, being suspended or expelled, and achieving far below their potential relative to the ethnic majority (Bennett, 1995). Consequently, teachers must prepare themselves and their children for the ever changing challenge of interacting and communicating with diverse races. Reduction of fear, ignorance, and personal detachment are possible benefits to a Multicultural education. The following excerpts are taken from Paul Gorski (1995), a University of Virginia Doctoral student during a case study interview: The idea of political correctness with the black race astounds me. I found it extremely interesting that some blacks in our class prefer to be called African American. In all of my classes†¦ I have felt like I was stepping on egg shells as to not offend the blacks in my class. I am honestly glad it is not that big of an issue to my fellow classmates–it promotes a more comfortable, genuine environment for me to be totally honest and carefree. Initially, the student interviewed in the case study reflected an attitude that would probably not facilitate consensus building, respect for other cultures, or fostering of cultural pluralism within different racial communities and in the classroom. However, with integrated curriculum, social activities, administrative support, and staff training, fear, ignorance, and personal detachment may be notably reduced in both students and teachers. Benefits to multicultural education can help to eliminate the crux of stereotyping, prejudice, racism, and bigotry (Fear, Ignorance, dis-ownership). Case study analyzed: 1. fear: â€Å"I have felt like I was stepping on egg shells as to not offend blacks in my classes†¦ † 2. ignorance: â€Å"I found it extremely interesting that some blacks in our class prefer to be called African American. † 3. dis-ownership: â€Å"I am honestly glad it is not that big of an issue to my fellow classmates. † The writer agrees with Hilliard and Pine (1990), â€Å"if Americans are to embrace diversity, the conscious and unconscious expressions of racism (sexism) within our society must be identified and done away with† (p. ). Multicultural education is the potential catalyst to bring all races together in harmony. Cons of Multicultural Education According to some views, if one wants to alienate and further fragment the communication and rapport between ethnic groups, implement multicultural education. As stated by Bennett (1995), â€Å"to dwell on cultural differences is to foster negative prejudices and stereotypes, and that is human nature to view those who are different as inferior† (p. 29). Thus, multicultural education will enhance feelings of being atypical. Schools in America may see multicultural education as a way to â€Å"color blind† their students to differences. Administrators may view the â€Å"color blind† approach as a gate keeper that assures equal treatment and justice for all students and as a way to facilitate compatibility and sameness of all cultures. A common statement from this line of thinking is, ‘we are more alike than different’. We should focus on the similarities and not the differences to achieve greater equanimity among the races. Ethnicity is breaking up many nations. If one looks at the former Soviet Union, India, Yugoslavia, and Ethiopia, all countries are in some type of crisis. Closer to home, one observes the divisiveness of the Rodney King and O. J. Simpson trials in our country, we can see how focusing on race and multiculturalism may lead to a further divisiveness between the races in America. Over time, multicultural education may have unplanned for and undesired consequences. For example, multicultural education rejects the historic American goals of assimilation and integration of ethnic cultures into the majority culture. Hence, the perception may result that America is a country of distinct ethnic groups, as opposed to a more traditional view of the country that involves individuals making decisions for the good of the order (Schlesinger, 1991). Multicultural education may increase the resentment encountered by students who feel that changes in school traditions, curriculum, and academic standards are not necessary to get along and respect students from ethnic minorities. Since many institutions resist change of any kind, passive resistance on the part of the administration may simulate acceptance of the tenants of Multicultural education. Of course, excepting the tenants of multicultural education should be avoided with enthusiasm and optimism. What would real Multicultural Education look like? The writer submits that multicultural education must have, as its crux, the below defining characteristics to achieve its purposes for students, teachers, parents, and administrators of the school system: a) a learning environment that supports positive interracial contact; b) a multicultural curriculum; c) positive teacher expectations; d) administrative support; and, e) teacher training workshops (Bennett, 1995). If one of the features is absent, frustration and heightened resentment may occur as backlash behaviors multiply. The effects of a positive multicultural climate may manifest in a number of ways, such as: a) diminished pockets of segregation among student body; b) less racial tension in the schools; c) increased ethnic minority retention and classroom performance; and, d) inclusion of a multicultural curriculum. In short, the multicultural educational environment should not be a microcosm of our present American society, with regard to issues of diversity and tolerance. Many factors determine a successful multicultural atmosphere, but the features as outlined above may be important indications of success. Administrative support for multicultural education is critical. How can a house stand if the foundation is fragile. Multicultural education will be as successful as commitment to it by school administrators. Regardless of the level of commitment (local, state, and/or national), programs initiated under the guise of multiculturalism must receive reinforcement from administrators who are accountable for the success of established multicultural initiatives. A key factor in any proposed multicultural initiative is curriculum development. A multicultural curriculum should be considered for several reasons: a) provides alternative points of view relative to information already taught in most educational systems; b) provides ethnic minorities with a sense of being inclusive in history, science etc. and, c) decreases stereotypes, prejudice, bigotry, and racism in America and the world. A significant demographic transformation is on the horizon for American schools. Educational institutions have been dictated too long by attitudes, values, beliefs, and value systems of one race and class of people. The future of our universe is demanding a positive change for all (Hilliard & Pine, 1990).

An Essay On The Advertisement Like A Girl

The Always advertisement entitled, â€Å"Always #LikeAGirl,† explores the social prejudices that young girls in American society face on a daily basis. It suggests the idea of changing the phrase â€Å"like a girl† from an insult into a compliment that represents the strength and power that lies within women and girls instead of weakness. This advertisement appeals to teen and pre-teen girls challenged by societal pressures as they face puberty. It also calls out American society as a whole for perpetuating the system that leads to the discrimination of women and girls. It was released in summer of 2014 to encourage girls to have confidence despite being in a season of typically male dominated physical activity. The Always advertisement unpacks the reality of gender inequality while simultaneously instilling power and self-esteem in young girls struggling to maintain self-confidence through puberty; it invites young women and girls into the conversation and vision of ge nder equality by associating a popular brand with women’s rights, creating a potential for impactful change through America’s youth. On a regular basis, the phrase â€Å"like a girl† is used as a derogatory term to hurt, intimidate, and demean both boys and girls in many different environments. This video uses this phrase continually to call to question what it actually means to run, swim, or throw like a girl. Throughout the video, boys and girls alike are asked to portray what it means to perform the above activities â€Å"like a girl.† The older girls, ages 12 and up, and the two boys portray the stereotypically weak and flimsy version of girls running. On the other hand, younger girls ages 10 and under portray running like a girl in a very strong and athletic manner demonstrating how a girl’s self-confidence and sense of identity drops off after puberty. It also shows how boys are part of the issue as well since they too adopt the stereotypes of weak and incapable women and girls. There are several moments of intensity in which the girls and boys in this video express their thoughts on wha t it means to be â€Å"like a girl.† At one point, a young woman asks the question, â€Å"Why can’t running like a girl also mean winning the race?† (Greenfield). It’s a challenging question aimed to bring the topic of gender equality to the forefront of the audience’s minds, which allows the audience to take into consideration what steps they can take to correct this issue. These stereotypes have come into existence through a variety of ways, one of which is the desire for men to prove their masculinity and in so doing squash femininity. Leah Funk and Cherie D. Werhun discuss exactly this in their article, â€Å" ’You’re Such a Girl!’ The Psychological Drain of the Gender-Role Harassment of Men.† The article discusses the results of a recent study in which one group of men was exposed to gender-related harassment while performing certain tasks and another group of men was not. The study found that the harassed group who was told that they hold a handgrip â€Å"like a girl† felt it more necessary to hold the handgrip for even longer when offered a second chance to improve their initial score. The article states, â€Å"During the second handgrip task, men in the harassment condition squeezed the handgrip significantly longer than men in the no harassment condition. Thus, whereas gender-role harassment caused significa nt impairments in cognitive ability and attentional self-regulation, tests of physical strength and stamina improved† (Funk and Werhun 19). According to this study the phrase â€Å"like a girl† is so threatening that grown men feel the need to prove whom they already are just to disassociate from women and girls. Actions like these lead to insecurities in men and women both which ultimately leads to the perpetuation of gender stereotypes. When men lose confidence by being compared to a girl, then they are subconsciously perpetuating gender discrimination by acknowledging that women are weak and because of that they must be insignificant or unimportant. These subconscious statements plays into the stereotype that women are weak and at times useless because of this. Women are not weak. There is a certain logical and scientific argument to men and boys being stronger than women and girls, which is partially valid. However, if you look closely the strength in women and g irls is just as obvious as that in men and boys, it just manifests itself in different ways at times. With feminism being a controversial topic currently, Always takes a bold stance by aligning themselves with the same audience that is buying their product. Young women and girls, especially those on the cusp of puberty are going to need to purchase feminine products at some point. Always advances the status of their reputable and well-known brand through this advertisement by showing their support for their market. Always wants their brand to become synonymous with gender equality, which is certainly something that much of their demographic also has a desire for. At the end of the day, many would say that this advertisement is just a marketing tool and that perhaps it is manipulative. In the article, â€Å"Yes, Always’ ‘Like A Girl’ Campaign is Great – but it’s Also Deceptive,† Madison Avenue writes, â€Å"[The Campaign] demonstrates real problems- femaleness as a derogatory statement, decrease in self-confidence as women mature – in a beautiful and clear way, but then pretends a corporate manufacturer of panty liners meant to ‘help you feel fresh every day’ can solve them† (Avenue). However, despite the fact that a driving force in all advertisements is profit, the message of this Always video outweighs the advertisement aspect because of how it draws women and girls into this conversation. Last year, Mo’ne Davis arrived hot on the scene of the Little League World Championships to prove that girls can thrive even in a male-dominated environment. Like the Always advertisement, she served, and continues to serve, as a beacon of hope for young women and girls who feel unable to be fully themselves as a result of gender discrimination. Melissa Isaacson discusses Mo’ne’s influence in â€Å"Why Mo’ne Davis’ Play Matters to Girls.† In the article, a young girl named Jamie Girgenti says of Davis, â€Å"Her self-esteem must be very high to play with all boys. She doesn’t seem stuck up at all but just someone with great confidence. Mo’ne would be my role model if I was on a baseball team. She would be my role model even in general† (Isaacson). This comment regarding Davis serves as an example of how necessary it is to have a strong female presence in all aspects of society. Young girls like Girgenti crave independence and freedom from the male-dominated society. By watching Davis, many girls were able to feel confidence in their own skin in a way they hadn’t experienced before. Always provides a similar level of confidence to young girls faced with having to choose their identity based on societal pressures. It provides an outlet for young women and girls to feel all the burdens they bear as a result of gender discrimination, while at the same time recognizing that they are not alone. The women and girls on their TV or computer screen understand exactly what they are going through. Always may be playing into the emotions of the audience through the use of pathos as a way of making money, but if that pushes young women and girls to take pride in who they are, then the relatively small level of potential emotional manipulation would be well worth it. Gender stereotyping and gender-related harassment begins at a very young age, which is why the potential for change is in the hands of America’s youth. Blogger and mother Jill Topol criticizes society for putting these pressures on kids from such a young age in her blog post, â€Å"The Gender Bias World of Toys.† In the post she describes her frustration with gendered toys and how by assigning specific toys to specific genders it inhibits creativity and active play in young children. She writes, â€Å"It makes me really sad. We’re stifling our children’s creativity in fear of what? That they’ll turn gay if they play with an Anna and Elsa doll. You know that’s not how it works, right?† (Topol). There is a certain freedom in being allowed to be exactly who you are. The toys you play with or the sports you play are simply a part of you, but they do not shape you. Topol writes about how her son was bullied for wanting to play with traditionally girl toys in addition to his traditionally boy toys. Similar to the article regarding men’s desire to prove their masculinity, toy discrimination as an offshoot of gender discrimination as a whole only leads to a recycled system of prejudice and stereotypes related to gender. To call that into question, like the Always advertisement does, cracks the system ever so slightly so that room can be made for equality. This Always advertisement appeals to young people in modern-day society who have the opportunity to raise their children in an accepting environment and ultimately re-shape how we view opposing sexes and their relatio nship to each other. At one point in the video, one girl describes how she is a girl through and through, which includes being feminine while at the same time athletic, and how that shouldn’t be something that she has to be ashamed of. This girl in particular stood out to me because as she shows the camera her athletic ability, she’s dressed in a dress and sandals. Typically, when girls are being portrayed as athletic they are dressed in athletic or masculine attire. I appreciated Always representing girls as exactly who they are in that they are both feminine and strong and not one or the other. If we are able to introduce young people to a new reality of acceptance and equality, then that will extend outwardly to future generations. Advertisements are one way to introduce this new way of thinking, since young people watch upwards of 40,000 commercials each year (Vitelli). By having an advertisement with a positive and timely message, the door to the idea of gender e quality starting with young people who are beginning to face or conform to gender discrimination can be opened. Finally, the Always advertisement and accompanying articles represent how using â€Å"like a girl† in regards to athletics is a very limited view. Instead, they expand the conversation to show that what it means to act â€Å"like a girl† shows up in all aspects of life. If girls are being portrayed as weak and powerless on the playground, then they are being portrayed and viewed as that in the classroom, at work and at home. Our prejudices towards girls while playing sports oozes into all facets of life, including the lives of men and boys who feel pressure to not associate with anything girl related. Regardless of the medium in which it is presented, it is our job to hear the message that is the importance of gender equality and confidence in young women and girls, and shape our lives, and in so doing the lives of young people in our society, in a way that supports that message and encourages freedom and equality for both men and women. How have journalists and academics investigated current themes and issues in the US presidential elections - Essay Example This research tells that the Presidential elections in the United States generate plenty of interest both within and outside the country.   Ascending into the role of a superpower at the culmination of the Second World War, the US foreign policies have had a significant impact in determining the political and economic success of nations all across the globe.   In this context, the scholarship, reportage and opinion editorials published in the lead up to the elections can reveal the contentious issues and underlying themes.   Such a study will help assess the merits and drawbacks of the American democratic enterprise, which the rest of this essay endeavors to. An issue that is always at the forefront of American politics is domestic economic policy and more importantly the issues of taxes and their expenditure.   In spite of political rhetoric about America being a â€Å"classless society, the statistics don't measure up to this claim. As Paul Krugman points out, â€Å"Thirt y years ago we were a relatively middle-class nation. It had not always been thus: Gilded Age America was a highly unequal society, and it stayed that way through the 1920s. During the 1930s and '40s, however, America experienced the Great Compression: a drastic narrowing of income gaps, probably as a result of New Deal policies. And the new economic order persisted for more than a generation: Strong unions; taxes on inherited wealth, corporate profits, and high incomes; close public scrutiny of corporate management--all helped to keep income gaps relatively small.... While Roosevelt's New Deal economic and social reforms met with outstanding success, it remains to be seen how the new President would cope with the Wall Street collapse of late. The historical similarities between the two don't end there. They both come from the Democratic Party and as Lichtman points out, piggybacked on a message of "change". And change is all the more imperative now than ever before in the post Second World War American history. For, irrespective of the fact that the country is the richest in the world, the extreme disparities in standard of living among its demography is a symbol of failed economic policies of previous presidents. According to estimates by the economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez, based on statistics released by the Congressional Budget Office, "between 1973 and 2000 the average real income of the bottom 90 percent of American taxpayers actually fell by 7 percent. Meanwhile, the income of the top 1 percent rose by 148 percent, the income of the top 0.1 percent rose by 343 percent and the income of the top 0.01 percent rose 599 percent. (Those numbers exclude capital gains, so they're not an artefact of the stock-market bubble.) The distribution of income in the United States has gone right back to Gilded Age levels of inequality" (Lichtman, 2008). While these statistics represent the systemic injustices of the American economic system, which all Democratic Party candidates point to in their campaigns, there is also a dedicated conservative press and its team of scholars, who attempt to discredit blatant realities with ideological rationale.
